An ideal location for bird watching, the Audubon Bird Sanctuary contains many trails as well as a pier overlooking Gaillard Lake. The island has been called one of the ten most important places for bird migrations in the world as well as having been selected as one of the top four places to view spring migrations. Dauphin Island's 164-acre sanctuary, located along the eastern part of the island, contains habitats including a fresh water lake, beaches, swamp land, pine forest, dunes and hardwood clearings.
