Description:

Built in 1861, the Fort Gaines played an important role in the Battle of Mobile Bay during the Civil War and served as an Alabama National Guard Camp in World War II. Now at the historic site visitors can explore the battlements and tunnels of the fort or enjoy a nature walk at the nearby 150-acre Audubon bird sanctuary. The fort is located southeast of town on Dauphin Island.
